BARRY
BARRY is Portrait Coffee's tribute to Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins—a coffee as layered and carefully composed as his films. Sourced from Rwanda's Humure cooperative in the Remera Sector of Gatsibo District, this washed Red Bourbon reflects the high-altitude clarity and meticulous processing that Eastern Province is celebrated for. At 1,500–1,900 meters above sea level, these cherries develop complex sugars and bright acidity that Portrait's roasting coaxes into a balanced, approachable cup.
Tasting Notes
Expect crisp cherry on the front, like biting into a just-ripe Bing, followed by the warmth of brown sugar and a refreshing green apple finish. The body is medium and silky, the acidity vibrant but never sharp—more like a well-edited scene than a jarring cut. The washed process keeps the profile clean and focused, letting the fruit and sweetness shine without distraction. The finish lingers gently, with a subtle tart-sweet aftertaste that invites the next sip.
Brew Methods
BARRY performs beautifully across methods. As pour-over (Hario V60, Kalita Wave), it delivers maximum clarity—those cherry and apple notes practically sing. French press brings out the brown sugar and adds a touch more body. For espresso, dial in a medium-fine grind and expect a fruit-forward shot with syrupy sweetness; it's excellent straight or as the foundation for a balanced cortado. Cold brew amplifies the sweetness and rounds out the acidity, making for an exceptionally smooth summertime sipper.
About the Roaster
Portrait Coffee, based in Atlanta, approaches coffee with the care and intentionality of visual storytelling. Each roast is a tribute—to origin, to craft, to the people behind the bean. Their BARRY series honors Barry Jenkins' attention to nuance and narrative depth.
