CONGO, IDJWI ISLAND WASHED
This washed Bourbon and Caturra comes from Idjwi Island, a remote volcanic island in Lake Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Grown between 1,500 and 2,000 meters by women members of Rebuild Women's Hope cooperative, it's a coffee with a story as compelling as its flavor. Portrait Coffee roasts it to showcase the terroir: bright tropical fruit, soft stone fruit sweetness, and a gentle cocoa undertow.
Tasting Notes
Expect pineapple acidity up front—juicy, clean, and vibrant—followed by ripe plum sweetness that rounds out the mid-palate. The finish is mellow and cocoa-toned, with a lingering smoothness that invites another sip. The body is medium and structured, not heavy, with a clarity that comes from careful fermentation and slow drying at altitude. This is a coffee that feels both lively and composed, with enough complexity to keep things interesting without tipping into sharpness.
Brew Methods
This coffee shines brightest as a pour over or drip—methods that let its fruit-forward profile and clean structure take center stage. Try it on a V60 or Chemex for maximum clarity, or dial it into an auto-drip brewer for an easy daily cup. It also holds up surprisingly well as espresso, where the pineapple brightness becomes more concentrated and the plum sweetness deepens into something almost jam-like. If you're pulling shots, aim for a slightly longer ratio to keep the acidity balanced and approachable.
About the Producers
Rebuild Women's Hope was founded in 2013 to create economic opportunity and leadership pathways for women in a region where agriculture has long been male-dominated. The cooperative provides access to processing facilities, education, and direct market connections, giving women producers not just income, but agency. Every bag represents both exceptional coffee and measurable progress rooted in dignity and long-term community impact.
