Limu

Barefoot Coffee Roasters' Limu is a luminous expression of Ethiopian coffee at its most elegant. Sourced from smallholder farmers in the Limu Seka district of Jimma zone—the plateau region neighboring coffee's birthplace in Keffa—this washed single origin captures the snappy, delicate fruit character that made Limu coffees legendary. Processed by Fahem General Trading PLC under the direction of Ato Mohamed Lalo, this coffee reflects both the region's extraordinary terroir and a commitment to sustainable practices that reinvest in local communities.

Tasting Notes

The cup opens with pronounced floral aromatics that bloom as the coffee cools. Blueberry muffin sweetness defines the midpalate—think warm, bakery-fresh berries with a subtle buttery richness—while black tea tannins provide structure and a clean, lingering finish. The body is delicate and silky, almost tea-like itself, with a bright acidity that never overwhelms. This is coffee that rewards attention: each sip reveals new layers of complexity, from honeyed sweetness (a nod to Jimma's famous coffee-blossom honey) to subtle stone fruit undertones.

Brew Methods

Limu's nuanced profile shines brightest in methods that emphasize clarity and aromatics. Pour over (V60, Kalita Wave) is ideal, allowing the floral notes and berry sweetness to fully express themselves. The Chemex amplifies the tea-like body and clean finish. For espresso, use lighter doses and moderate temperatures to preserve the delicate fruit character—this coffee makes a stunning single-origin shot that tastes like blueberry compote with floral complexity. French press works beautifully at slightly lower brew temperatures (195-200°F) to avoid extracting bitterness from the tea-like tannins.

About the Coffee

Grown at 1900 meters above sea level, this coffee benefits from the dramatic elevation and fertile volcanic soils of the Jimma plateau. Fahem General Trading operates a traceable supply chain, registering smallholder farmers and processing their cherry centrally at the estate. The washed process involves underwater fermentation for 12 hours, a fresh water soak for another 12 hours, and 7-10 days of screen-bed drying—meticulous steps that produce Limu's signature clarity and brightness. Fahem employs over 500 people during harvest and reinvests profits into schools, infrastructure, and farmer training programs.
