Sumatra Mandheling

Sumatra Mandheling

From the volcanic highlands of Aceh, Sumatra, this Mandheling coffee delivers the bold, earthy character Indonesian beans are famous for—with a surprisingly clean finish. Roasted by Parisi Coffee to a medium profile, it earned a 90-point score from Coffee Review in 2013, and it remains a benchmark for anyone exploring single-origin coffees beyond the familiar Central American profiles.

Grown by the Koperasi Baitul Qiradh Baburrayyan cooperative at 1200–1400 meters above sea level, this Catimor varietal undergoes pulp natural processing, a method that strips the cherry's outer skin but leaves some mucilage during drying. The result? A syrupy body with less of the funky, fermenty notes you might find in traditional wet-hulled Sumatrans, and more clarity in the cup.

Tasting Notes

Expect dark chocolate richness up front, followed by the subtle bitterness of pipe tobacco and a finish that echoes roasted walnut. The body is substantial—almost creamy—while the acidity stays low and mellow. This is a coffee that feels grounded, not bright, with a lingering sweetness that balances the earthier tones beautifully.

Brew Methods

This Sumatra shines in a French press, where the full body and oils can develop without a paper filter muting them. It's also excellent as a pour-over if you want to tease out more of the chocolate and nut nuances, though you'll want a slightly coarser grind to avoid over-extraction. For espresso, it pulls a thick, syrupy shot with low acidity—ideal for straight sipping or as the base of a cappuccino that won't get lost under milk.

About the Roaster

Parisi Coffee, a Kansas City mainstay since 1912, sources directly from cooperatives and roasts with precision to let origin characteristics lead. Their medium roast here respects the bean's natural sweetness while coaxing out deeper, caramelized notes.
